Chapter Eleven

Ella

Morning brought with it a whole new set of challenges. Uncle Tony came by with breakfast, none of which I ate. I don’t trust that he didn’t drug it. It smelled good, though, considering I haven’t eaten since lunch yesterday. My stomach complained the whole time, but I am not my stomach. I can soldier through.

When Uncle Tony determined I wasn’t going to eat no matter how many times he even tasted my food to show me it was safe, he sighed and moved on. A nurse came in to take my blood. I was told that if I put up a fuss, they’d just strap me down. They’d rather not have to hurt me.

Little good that did. My veins move, and if you don’t know how to deal with them, you end up bruising me worse than necessary. The nurse who took my blood didn’t care when I told her she needed to use a butterfly needle or she’d cause bruises. She literally shoved a needle in and moved it around several times in both arms with no luck. Another nurse had to come in and do it. Currently, I’m sitting on the bed with ice packs on both arms because they hurt so much, I can barely move them.

You’d think the military would have better trained personnel, but maybe they just don’t care when it comes to supernatural creatures. Their aim is to study and learn, not to make it comfortable for them.

I do know one thing, though. If I get out of here, and Dad doesn’t leave his job, he and I are done. I’m out of the house as soon as I turn eighteen. I’ll go stay with Gramps and Eli. I don’t care how that looks to anyone else. If Dad still thinks what he’s doing is a good thing after they took me, then that’s on him. I’ll cut him out of my life no matter how much it might hurt in the long run.

There’s a knock on my door, and the lock disengages before it opens to reveal Tony and Dad’s boss, General Sylvia Griggs. She’s older than my dad, but she looks at least ten to fifteen years younger. Sure, her dark hair could be dyed, but I don’t think so. She’s using some kind of magic to stay young. Can I taste magic like others can? Nope, but doesn’t mean I can’t make an educated guess.

“Ella, dear, I hope you slept well.”

“Considering I was hit over the head and kidnapped, I’m going to say no.”

“Has a doctor checked your head wound?”

“Nope. All anyone has done is ignore me when I tell them my veins move, and now I can’t move my arms.” I let the ice packs fall so they can see the mess of bruises up and down my arms. “Real professional.”

General Griggs tsks like she’s upset. I know better. I’m here because of her.

“I do apologize. We want to run some tests later this morning, so I’ll have a CT done of your head and make sure there’s no lasting damage.
